Fiji Airports spent $130m between 2014 and 2018 on the first phase of the Nadi International Airport modernisation works.
This was recently revealed by the company’s chief executive officer Mesake Nawari.
“This was mainly done in the departure area and our focus will be to continue to develop and modernise our infrastructure in line with the 2018 – 2043 master plan,” he said.
“The master plan includes the extension of the apron expansions including offgate apron, expansion of departures, baggage handling and arrivals facilities.”
Apart from construction of four new aerobridges, relocation of the freight terminal and cargo complex, a new domestic airport next to the international airport and the development of a transit hotel and car park are also in the pipeline.
He said at the height of COVID 19 in 2021, the Nausori Airport runway upgrade was completed at a cost of $67m.
“It was done with a purpose of having a B737 aircraft land in Nausori. Furthermore, plans for Nausori Airport include the construction of the new airport terminal.
“Nadi International Airport is recognised globally as a leader in the aviation industry and a national icon for Fiji and to meet the capacity demand and forecast growth in the airport operations in the next 20 years, Fiji Airports was investing in the infrastructure of the two international airports and 13 domestic airports they operate.”
