A heavy rain and strong wind warning has been issued for the whole country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) issued the warnings yesterday after an active trough of low pressure was located to the west of Fiji.

FMS acting director Bipen Prakash said the active trough was embedded with a low-pressure system that was gradually moving east towards Fiji.

“The embedded low-pressure system is forecasted to intensify as it passes through the Fiji Group,” said Mr Prakash in a statement.

This trough of low pressure and the embedded low-pressure system is likely to affect the Fiji Group from this afternoon or evening until early Friday.

“This system is anticipated to produce occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, and thunderstorms over most parts of the group from this (yesterday) afternoon or evening.”

Mr Prakash said as a result, a flash flood warning was also in force for most parts of the country.

“A flash flood warning is now in force for flood-prone areas, small streams and low-lying crossings in the Western, Central and Eastern divisions, while a flash flood alert is now in force for the Northern Division. With the favourable environmental conditions, there is a high chance for isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

“High-intensity rainfall can be experienced in a short duration.”

He said Fijians should take extra care when moving around especially in areas that had been experiencing rain over the past few weeks.
