The Fiji women’s cricket team had a tough day on Wednesday, as they suffered two defeats in the South Seas Healthcare Pacific Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.

In their first match, they were convincingly beaten by 135 runs by a determined Vanuatu side.

Fiji struggled to get going, posting a low score, while Vanuatu dominated with a convincing 169 runs.

Their second match against Cook Islands saw another defeat for Fiji, as they lost by nine wickets. Coach Joeli Mateyawa said for most of the players it’s a new environment to play in especially the equipment used, and playing on turf wickets, compared to a normal pitch in Fiji.

“Moral is high into the second day after playing the first round, hope to see an improvement in all departments of play,” said Mateyawa.

“The team will be looking to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches. It’s important for them to learn from their defeats and work on their weaknesses to improve their performance in the remaining matches.” he added.

Fiji team manager Luisa Vodonaivalu said they were the only local based team while other nations had most of their players playing in New Zealand and Australia.

“We don’t see that as a challenge but a motivating factor going up against the best in the Pacific.” she added.
