Working to provide for family is a huge responsibility for any man, irrespective of his age.
Barmand Nand, 58, is a hardworking man whose job is to ensure the streets of the capital city are cleaned.
As he surveys his handiwork, he is armed with a broom, a rake and a garbage bag.
Nand was born and raised in Ba. He started school at Qerelevu Hindu School and stayed until Class 8 more than 40 years ago.
Unfortunately, he did not have the chance to experience high school, but that did not stop him from pushing forward and hustling for a better life.
The much loved game of soccer has been one of his hobbies for years and continues to be one of his favorite all time sports.
Nand started work at DAV Boys School in Nabua for 19 years until he retired. He then moved on to working for the Suva City Council where he is currently employed for about four months.
Nand says while he is happy to have a job, he is also passionate about his job and takes it very seriously to ensure the city maintains its cleanliness. “I am happy with this job and really grateful to be given the responsibility of keeping our city clean,” he said.
“The main thing right now is a job.
“No job, you won’t be able to do anything with no money, no food and you’re not able to go anywhere.”
Nand’s daily routine consists of waking up every morning from Monday to Saturday around 6am. He begins cleaning from 10am until 6pm six days a week.
He is also a happily married man with two children. His son currently works in New Zealand while his daughter is in Fiji at the moment.
His job is not as easy as one might think, but through all the negativity in life, passion has always won it for him.
The scorching heat and rain do not hinder him from getting his work done, sweeping and raking rubbish left behind by irresponsible people, even though rubbish bins are provided.
Nand currently resides in Nausori with his wife.
