The National Rugby League trial match between Melbourne Storm and Newcastle Knights could potentially be the catalyst of bringing more games to Fiji.

The two teams are set to grace our shores next month for a historic NRL trial match, the first to ever to be held in Fiji.

Storm chief executive Justin Rodski said since the confirmation, they had been excited to create something special for the sport in the country.

“The support of Fiji Airways and Tourism Fiji has helped to make this groundbreaking match become a reality and we can’t wait to give Fijians the opportunity to see their NRL stars up close and personal.

“We already have a lot of Fijian talent within our game, and this serves as an incredible opportunity to not only grow the sport we love but help develop the next wave of talent and hopefully give more young men and women the chance to play NRL or NRLW.

“Once our players knew Fiji was locked in, they were all very excited about getting over there, playing the game, meeting all our Storm fans and experiencing the country.”

This trial is a step closer to the bigger ambition of Fiji’s potential to hosting an NRL match.

“We’re hoping that this trial match will be the catalyst for future NRL games to be played in Fiji.

The NRL has been actively working to expand the game internationally and has been very supportive of Storm playing their second trial match of 2024 in Fiji.

A great turnout for our match against the Knights would really help to encourage more games in Fiji.

“There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes since we announced Fiji Airways Storm’s premium partner in October when the idea was first raised.

Since then, we have been in discussion with Fiji Airways, Tourism Fiji, the NRL, Fiji NRL, hotels, the broadcasters and potential partners who have all helped the game to become a reality,” Rodski added.

“Fiji loves its rugby league and has a great history of producing NRL players who have enjoyed fantastic careers.

We’re proud to have the Fiji Bati captain Tui Kamikamica in our squad and have seen the positive influence he has in his homeland.”

The Storm is also looking forward to connecting with the local Fijian community and engaging with schools and local rugby league clubs in the week leading into the game.

The February 24 match at Churchill Park in Lautoka would be the Storm’s last trial before a final squad is selected for the new season.
