In the remote village of Nasaibitu, nestled in the heart of Wainibuka, Tailevu, a remarkable woman has become a source of healing.

She is Liliviwa Sekira, a woman gifted with the extraordinary ability to prescribe herbal medicines for various ailments.

From Nakorowaiwai, Nakorotubu in Ra, Liliviwa’s legacy transcends her small Fijian community, drawing people from around the world who seek her unique expertise.

Her journey into the realm of herbal medicine began when she was bestowed with the rare gift at the age of 16. Growing up in an area blessed with lush vegetation, she developed an innate connection with nature and its curative powers.

“This gift has been passed down from generation to generation and I got it when I was 16, back in my village of Nakorowaiwai,” said Liliviwa

Now, at the age of 69, Liliviwa stands as a living testament to the power of traditional healing remedies and medicines..

Despite the passing of her husband, she continues to reside in Nasaibitu where she has become an integral part of the community.

She earns the respect and admiration of both locals and visitors who travel great distances to seek her somewhat unorthodox remedial intervention.

“I don’t see myself returning to my village, I know that my calling is to be here in my late husband’s village and to serve those who need healing,” she said.

What sets Liliviwa apart is her ability to craft herbal medicines exclusively from leaves and plants that grow naturally in Nasaibitu.

This has enabled her to possess an extensive knowledge of the local flora.

The traditional Fijian wisdom ingrained in her prescriptions has attracted visitors not only from nearby regions but also from far-flung places like China and Australia.

“I just see a plant and can tell what it heals and know this to be true because every year I have people coming from all over the world.”

Her modest dwelling doubles as a healing sanctuary.

Visitors are welcomed with the soothing scents of freshly harvested leaves and the rhythmic sounds of medicinal preparations. Liliviwa’s approach is holistic, taking into account not only the physical symptoms of diseases and infections but also their emotional and spiritual aspects.

Her consultations are not just about treating ailments; they are immersive experiences that connect individuals with the healing energy of nature.

Liliviwa listens intently to each person’s unique story, understanding that true healing requires a personalized approach.

This empathetic touch has become a hallmark of her practice.

Beyond her role as a healer, Liliviwa has also become a guardian of traditional knowledge, ensuring that the art of herbal healing continues to thrive in Nasaibitu.

She imparts her wisdom to the younger generation, nurturing a lineage of healers who will carry on her legacy when she departs.

“I do not charge for my service because I believe this is my calling and I can bless people with it so I don’t take money,” she said.
