The Fiji women’s national basketball side has secured a spot in the semi-final of the Pacific Games after thrashing Tonga 75-46 in the first women’s quarter-final yesterday.
They will now face Cook Islands in the semis tomorrow at the Friendship Hall in Honiara at 1pm.
Head coach Earl Hughes said while his side started slow in the first quarter, the team was able to regain their composure to finally win the match.
“I was surprised that the girls started quite slow in the first quarter as we just managed to collect eight points to nil,” he said.
“However, they were able to get back in the following quarters and execute what we discussed during our timeouts.”
With the side set to face Cook Islands, Hughes said they were expecting a tough battle but are adamant to make it to the next level.
“Yes, Cook Islands are a tough team, but we have been preparing well over the past few months for this competition, so we are up for the challenge.”
Hughes thanked Tonga for giving his side a tough match, bringing out areas his side still needs to work on before the semis.
“Quite a few things we still have to work on, and we give credit to Tonga for pushing the girls to their limits.
“So for now, it’s back to our drawing board, where we will have to prepare well for Cook Islands in the semis.”
