The Fiji women’s indoor volleyball side secured a spot in Pacific Games quarter-finals after defeating Tuvalu at the Friendship Hall in Honiara yesterday.
Fiji defeated Tuvalu 3 sets to nil in their last pool match to record two wins and a loss.
Fiji head coach and former national volleyball rep Varanisese Logavatu said their target for this year’s Pacific Games was slowly becoming a reality.
“We knew what we had to do coming into this game against Tuvalu, and I thank the girls for going all out to secure a spot in the quarter-finals,” she said.
Fiji won the sets 25-22, 25-6 and 25-16.
“After our game against Samoa on Monday, we went back and talked about the areas that needed improvement, and it was good to see the girls execute that.”
She said their match against Tuvalu had set the momentum for the rest of the tournament, where they hoped to finish in the top three.
“Reaching the podium and finishing in the top three is our target for this year’s games and we are very adamant in reaching it.
“Our game against Tuvalu has certainly prepared us well, and we are looking forward to the quarters.”
While Fiji’s opponent in the quarters is still yet to be confirmed, the games begin tomorrow at 6pm (Fiji Time).
“For now we’re just going to rest well throughout the day before we get ready to take on whoever they place us with in the quarters.”
Meanwhile, the men’s team faced Papua New Guinea yesterday afternoon.
The side lost to Tahiti 3-0 on Friday before bouncing back to beat Tuvalu 3-1.
