The Fiji women’s indoor volleyball side got its Pacific Games campaign back on track after beating Samoa 3-1 at the Friendship Hall in Honiara, Solomon Islands yesterday.

After a 3-1 loss to New Caledonia in the opening match, the side put Samoa, which won the bronze medal at the last Pacific Games, to the sword from the start.

They won the first and second sets 31-29 and 25-21 before Samoa won the third 25-17.

Fiji went o to seal the match 25-21 in the fourth set. The side will now face Tuvalu its final pool match at 1pm today.

Head coach Varanisese Logavatu said sticking to their game plan throughout the match was all they needed to secure their first win of the tournament.

“We came today with a plan, and that we go all out against Samoa,” she said.

“And that’s exactly what the girls did, allowing them to come out with the result we wanted.”

Logavatu said their first set was based on getting to know their opponent’s style of play before heading into the next three sets.

“It took the girls a bit longer than usual to catch on to the style Samoa was playing, but they were able to do so eventually.

“Since our last game against New Caledonia on Saturday, the team went back and worked on some of our weaknesses and the result has shown today.”

She stressed the importance of sticking to the game plan during any match, even if things are going according to plan.

“Sticking to the game plan is very important even if you may be losing. “I was happy to see the girls stick to our game plan throughout our game today.”

Meanwhile, the men’s side beat Tuvalu 3-1.
