To tackle the increasing number of road fatalities, the Transport Ministry, the Land Transport Authority and police are working with the Fiji Roads Authority to step up road safety awareness efforts over the festive season and into the new year.

Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau met the LTA board and other stakeholders at Valelevu on Thursday to discuss collaborative approaches and stringent measures to combat the spike in road deaths.

The discussions included strengthening combined operations between the LTA and the police, the monitoring of high-risk areas and black spots, tightening up on driving schools as well as the issuance of driving instructor permits.

There will also be awareness programs conducted in communities that focus on driver, passenger and pedestrian behaviour.

Ro Filipe is urging all road users to exercise caution and vigilance during the festive season while also complying with road safety rules.

“We need to continuously remind all road users that they share equal responsibilities in ensuring road safety, whether you are a driver, a passenger or a pedestrian,” he said.

“We have lost enough lives on our roads.”

Ro Filipe said LTA would continue to roll out its community and public outreach programs on road safety, education, awareness and media partnerships to amplify key messages of adhering to road safety rules and standards.

From August to October this year, the LTA visited 45 schools nationwide, reaching approximately 7685 individuals.
