The Fijian Elections Office is heading in a new direction, in line with its new strategic plan.

Acting Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa says the plan was drawn up following the change in leadership earlier this year.

“We incorporated our executive management team which included the directors and the acting supervisor of elections,” she said.

“And from there we sat with our co-ordinators and managers and told them it was time for us now to listen to the public,” she says while addressing the media in Suva yesterday.

“For the past three elections people have been telling us things have been happening and we have not lent them a safe place voice their concerns.

“So we started with consultations with the media, civil society organisations and political parties in giving them a safe space to express what they had experienced in the past elections. “And it also enabled us to understand the concerns that were raised.”

Ms Mataiciwa says issues raised during these consultations made them realise that changes needed to be made within the elections office.

“We looked at our vision, mission, our guiding principles and we thought there needs to be a change, and a new direction for the Fijian Elections Office.

“So that is where we were introduced to the new vision, mission and guiding principles.

“This is not the Fijian Elections Office that you knew previously where you could not come into our doors. This is an inclusive Fijian Elections Office where you are always welcome to come to us.”
