The Fiji Labour Party has taken a provisional decision to contest the much-awaited municipal council elections.

Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry confirmed this in Nadi on Saturday following the 2023 delegates conference at the Capricorn Hotel after party members called for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

Registered party members believed the process should be carried out in the most appropriate manner and those involved in the process should be neutral and fair.

“It all depends on the consultation process that is currently underway and the recommendations it comes up with,” Mr Chaudhry said.

“We are waiting for the next sitting of Parliament where a proposed Bill to amend the act, particularly those provisions which relate to elections of municipal councils, are proposed and what the amendments are.

“It’s still premature at the moment; we don’t know what the Government is proposing because there is nothing definite at the moment.”

The seasoned politician said they would await the outcome of the next Parliament sitting before taking the next move.

“There is a draft Bill so we have to wait and see what comes out of Parliament.”
