An early morning fire at the Lautoka police barracks left residents shaken as flames engulfed the two-storey bachelors’ quarters, home to 30 occupants.
The blaze, which began on the top floor, prompted swift action from the emergency services.
Divisional police commander West Senior Superintendent Iakobo Vaisewa said the fire originated on the top floor and that the authorities responded promptly, ensuring the safe evacuation of all residents from the burning building.
He said the quick and co-ordinated response from fire and rescue teams helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures, minimising further damage and potential casualties.
The cause of the fire is unknown and the ongoing investigation will determine how it started.
“We are currently awaiting the National Fire Authority to conduct a thorough examination of the incident and provide us with a comprehensive report,” SSP Vaisewa said.
Concerned residents and onlookers gathered near the scene and watched firefighters battle the blaze.
While the situation was brought under control within hours, the top floor of the barracks suffered significant damage.
