A partner in the Coalition Government, the National Federation Party has for the first time publicly opposed a government decision after Fiji voted against the United Nations resolution calling for a cease-fire in the Isarel-Hamas war so that humanitarian supplies can be delivered to residents in Gaza.

The party’s secretary-general Kamal Iyer said “Fiji had the option of abstaining but didn’t”.

“We know and understand that we are part of the Coalition Government, and the principles of collective Cabinet and Parliamentary responsibility,” he said.

“The NFP makes it absolutely clear that the party’s public position on this issue in no way undermines either the Coalition or its leadership.”

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s posed the question “who stirred the hornets’ nest?” when asked yesterday why Fiji voted against the United Nations resolution calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war so that humanitarian supplies can be delivered to residents in Gaza.

Mr Rabuka didn’t comment further on this issue.
