Ba Provincial Holdings Ltd has written to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka requesting urgent inspection and restoration works be carried out to avoid further shoreline erosion in Marou, Naviti in Yasawa.

In a letter addressed to the PM on March 21, company CEO Isimeli Bose requested the Government to carry out a survey to assess drainage and design a suitable foreshore rehabilitation scheme plan with estimated costs for restoration.

“Extensive shoreline erosion caused by climate change and rising sea level in the last 20 years and a badly designed constructed jetty by the former Public Works Department in 1998 near Naviti District School has washed away nearly a quarter of the houses and sites of the village of Marou,” Mr Bose’s letter read.

“Through a bad drainage system of uncompleted roadworks built by the PWD, extensive flooding of the village is common now and creating stream outlets in the village and nearby Naviti District and Yasawa High schools.

“This matter was reported to the disaster committee, and the Government had acknowledged it, however, nothing has been done.

“This matter is again brought to your attention for the Government to assist in the rehabilitation.”

Mr Bose also indicated they would be happy to work with the Government to carry out the necessary restoration work.
