Former deputy commissioner of police, Eroni Antonio, has urged police officers to fully understand the “blue culture”.

He made the comment while addressing members of the Constable Qualifying Course training at the Lautoka police training room last week.

Mr Antonio served in the Fiji Police Force for 41 years.

“Do you understand what the blue culture is?” he said.

“When you walk in town, you don’t walk freely. You’re getting paid to work, that’s service.

“This work requires passion and you need to understand what your purpose is, and that should be reflected in your work.

“A good and honest police officer is one who can work with minimum or no supervision at all. You are trusted to do what you were taught to do and you know that what is right is right, what is wrong is never right.”

Mr Antonio also urged the police officers to develop themselves professionally.

“If you have knowledge of your work, you won’t be scared of anything. You will have the courage to address something that is wrong.

“Wherever you go, remember, you swore an oath, someone is watching you. If you cheat, you’re cheating yourself.”
