As the ANZ bank steps up its focus on sustainability, it announced that all its credit cards in Fiji would be produced using a minimum of 70 per cent recycled plastic.

ANZ Fiji country head Rabih Yazbek said with almost 5500 ANZ credit cards in circulation in Fiji, this was another simple, but significant way for ANZ to move towards a more sustainable future.

“There’s no change to the look and feel or security aspects of these cards, so as customer cards expire or new ANZ customers receive their cards, we will issue cards made from recycled plastic,” Mr Yazbek said.

According to the bank studies undertaken by the supplier of the recycled plastic reveal a 44–60 per cent reduction in the carbon footprint, compared with “first use” plastic.

“We’re always looking for ways to make our cards, and other parts of our business, more sustainable,” Mr Yazbek said.

According to Mr Yazbek in May last year, the bank said all new ANZ Visa debit cards issued across the Pacific would be produced using a minimum of 70 per cent recycled plastic.

“Since then, we’ve switched almost 34,000 ANZ Visa debit cards to recycled plastic, demonstrating just how the banking sector can role model sustainability in the community.

“We have actively reduced our internal printing volumes, with a 44.5 per cent reduction in printing.

“We’ve also seen a 56 per cent reduction in statement printing for our customers since 2021, a combination of moving digital statements and a change in our returned mail process. It’s great to be directly reducing our environmental impact through innovation, efficiency and increased employee awareness,” Mr Yazbek said.
