The arrival of a government barge laden with supplies has brought respite to over 2000 people on the island of Rotuma.

Last Friday, the barge departed Suva filled with drinking water and fuel after concerns were raised over shortages on the island.

The vessel reached the island at 11pm last Sunday.

Dr John Fatiaki, the Council of Rotuma special adviser, said those 2000 individuals were equivalent to approximately 450 households.

“The entire island populace was affected by the recent shortages and have therefore all been assisted,” he said.

“Some of the essential items that came was fuel for the water supply, vehicle transportation for school trips and community travel, and electricity generation throughout the entire island and this catered for all families who were affected by the recent shortages.”

Dr Fatiaki said the situation on the island had improved and they were very grateful and thankful.

“We now wait with hopeful anticipation the arrival of the Goundar’s Shipping franchise trip which was supposed to have come to the island on July 15, but will instead depart this Saturday (August 5), and will bring additional provisions, food and more fuel supplies, vehicles and building materials.”

Last week, Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau stated the issue had occurred when a scheduled delivery was not fulfilled by the shipping operator.

He also confirmed Government was reviewing its monitoring of services to Rotuma, along with long-term strategies in consultation with the Rotuma Council, chiefs and people.
