The Fiji bowls team will be banking on its experienced players to solidify Fiji’s position as the best in the region at the 2023 World Bowls Championship in Gold Coast, Australia.
Men’s team manager Surendra Prasad said preparation for the competition which was scheduled for August 29 to September 10 had been going well, with trainings being alternatively held at Suva’s bowling club and Nadi sports club.
He said the Fiji contingent includes five men and five women and a manager each who would participate in four different disciplines of the game.
“We have four disciplines which include singles, pairs, triples and fours and both men and women will participate in the four disciplines,” he said.
He said Bowls Championship was the only major competition for Team Fiji this year as the 2023 Pacific Games did not include the sport.
Prasad added they had used the absence of bowls at the Pacific Games to their advantage as they had dedicated all their time and energy to preparing for the World Championship.
He said they would be banking on experienced players such as Semesa Naiseruvatu, Rajinesh Raju and Kushal Pillay for the men and the likes of Loreta Kotoisuva, Sheral Mar and Radhika Prasad for the women’s side.
Prasad said Fiji has competed well at pervious championships, winning silver medals at previous competitions.
He said they hoped to do one better and win gold, but the team is also aware of stiff competition from other nations.
The team will be holding regular trainings before they depart for Australia later next month.
