Opposition member of Parliament Parveen Bala has been instructed to show evidence regarding certain claims he made against Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad in Parliament on Monday.
Prof Prasad raised a point of order pursuant to the Standing Orders 62 (4) in Parliament, which was considered by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu in yesterday’s proceedings.
Mr Bala had alleged Prof Prasad and National Federation Party candidates had made promises prior to the election related to cane price per ton.
He also spoke about the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) debt write-off and that it was limiting access to higher education.
Ratu Naiqama said Mr Bala must provide proof that Prof Prasad did say those actual words, the place and date where he made such remarks.
If he was unable to do so, he must withdraw both statements before the budget debate was completed on July 13 (Thursday).
Additionally, Ratu Naiqama said if in the event this was not done, the matter would be referred to the Privileges Committee.
