Defying all odds in a man’s world is female bodybuilder Komal Raj. A lawyer by profession, Komal is making her mark in bodybuilding which she says is quite challenging in Fiji considering it’s a male-dominated sport.

“I’ve joined other females who are into bodybuilding. I think we have about five females who compete,” she said.

The 33-year-old said it’s very unusual for women like her particularly a Fijian of Indian descent to join this type of sport locally.

“I’m trying to break that stigma and establish a mark in bodybuilding for females. Even though training sessions can be tough at times — men I work with — are very supportive,” she said.

Being an Indo-Fijian woman, I’m not naturally gifted with a big physique and I do have a small built, so getting to where I want to be means growing.

“It’s not just about show of muscles but having a strong mental focus and willpower in order to succeed. Bodybuilding requires a level of concentration and commitment,” she said.

“In and out of the gym we are more a bodybuilding family sharing ideas and experiences.”

Originally from Labasa, Komal was awarded the Prime Ministers National Youth Sports Achievement Award in May last year. She said winning was not what she had expected but she was grateful.

“I was just happy being nominated,” Komal said modestly.

“I came to support other nominees and just experience the awards itself.”

She added that winning was also a great experience and that she was appreciative for being recognised for her part. Despite whatever challenges, she overcomes.

“I’ve won Miss Fiji title twice in 2018 and 2019, I’ve also won Miss South Pacific model physique title which was held at the South Pacific Championship in New Caledonia.

“I’ve won two gold medals and silver at the South Pacific Championship as well and I’ve won titles and medals locally.”

Komal is not only known for the many titles and medals but is also an aspiring lawyer with a BCOM and LLB to her name.

“I am currently pursuing my masters in law at the University of Auckland on scholarship.”

Komal says getting admitted to the bar in Fiji and winning the Miss South Pacific title were two achievements she holds dearly. Her advice to the youths is keep trying no matter what.

“Be persistent, motivated, and disciplined, we all have our ups and downs.

“The days where you feel that you are down those are the days you look back at your goals what you want to achieve in life and keep going.”
