ABOUT 14 clubs have registered to participate in the Fiji Amateur Boxing trials competition for the Pacific Games.
The trials will be held at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Suva later this month.
Manager of Fiji Amateur Boxing Ana Ledua said the momentum had never stopped for boxing since 2020.
“We’ve got 14 clubs registered in the Fiji Amateur Association, with two clubs from Sigatoka, three from Nadi, and two from Ba.
“Our trials competition will be on the 24th, our weigh-in is at 7am to 9am, and the competition will start at 1pm,” said Ledua.
“Amateur Boxing in Fiji is coming up the ladder, hoping to see other people come join boxing to make it a major sport.
“The challenges we’re facing is the financial support.
“We run at our own cost because being a minor sport, we find it hard to get sponsorship and businesses on board.
“With financial problems we are not able to hold this competition as regular as we want it.
“We have our clubs coming all the way from the west at their own cost.
“If we are financially supported,we could at least have something set up for the West, to develop interest in boxing there and we can have more boxing competition there. For all clubs they do their own preparations and a boxer’s safety is always a priority.
“We are hoping to see a big turn out in the trials.”
