Rural roads need to be fixed. Speaking to sugar cane growers in Nadroga, who raised their concerns about the unattended cane access roads, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad said the bad road issue was experienced throughout the country.

He said Government was working closely with relevant stakeholders to address the problem.

“We have the Fiji Roads Authority dealing with all of our road networks and FSC dealing with the cane access roads.

“We recognise that our roads, especially in our rural areas, need a lot of work. That is something that we are going to address in the national budget.

“We are continuing to work closely with FRA.

“There is a lot of work to be done.

“In their last budget, FRA had finished their entire year’s budget in six months. That is something that we are looking at very closely.”

Prof Prasad was responding to farmers from the Lomawai and Cuvu sectors where utility works was an urgent need.

Most of the farmers have been affected by bad road conditions with some having lost some income because the roads prevented cane trucks from accessing farms.
