Cost of basic food

CONSUMERS in Lautoka City remain optimistic that Government will reduce duty on imported goods that fall under the basic food item category resulting in a reduction of their prices.

As the country looks forward to the announcement of the 2015 National Budget this Friday, concerned consumers say they look forward to find a change in food prices.

A random survey by The Fiji Times on people’s expectations found many focused on the increasing cost of food prices.

Amit Kumar of Tavarau Settlement says he believes duty on imported food such as canned fish, lamb chops and milk is the reason behind the high prices.

“I think that’s where they should start. Reduce the duty on imported food and it also goes for all the imported things that are expensive because if these taxes are too high then we will continue to pay more,” he said.

“A lot of people cannot enjoy these things because they are poor.”
