For 34 years the Defence Club of Fiji (DCF) and the Roya Nuku’alofa Club (RNC) of Tonga have had a tradition of biannual visits.

Members of the clubs would gather at the respective clubs in either Suva or Nuku’alofa for a list of socials.

This was put on hold when COVID-19 flared up in 2019 and brought travel to a halt.

Takitoa Taumoepeau said he was part of a 48-member delegation of the Royal Nuku’alofa Club and their families who came to Suva to take part in a series of friendly pool, snooker and darts competitions hosted by the Defence Club of Suva.

The first since the borders opened in November of 2021. Taumoepeau said the RNC won the competitions this trip, beating the DCF 25 to 23 in total points in the pool, snooker and darts.

He also said the planning for the Defence Club’s visit to Nuku’alofa in 2025 would begin and would be finalised later. Defence Club trustee Wayne Wong said the clubs practically celebrated their Centennial celebrations together, with the RNC being formed in 1914 and the DCF in 1915.

“This reciprocal visit between the clubs commenced in 1985,” he said.

Wong thanked the visitors for a memorable three days of competition.

Members of the clubs gathered at the Fiji Golf Club in Riffle Range, Vatuwaqa on Monday for a social farewell bout of golf before the RNC members set back off to Tonga this week.
