Hilton properties in Fiji have partnered with Fiji Chemicals to launch the Glass Crushing for Bricks initiative aiming to address social environmental challenges.
The properties, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa in Denarau and DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji, Sonaisali Island are piloting the project coinciding with Earth Week.
Hilton Fiji properties organised activities over the past week with several eco-friendly initiatives, including recycling, reducing wastage, promoting sustainability and giving back to the community.
According to the resort, the new program focuses on utilising glass to make bricks that could be used in construction work.
Under the partnership, Hilton properties in Fiji will work with Fiji Chemicals to collect and transport waste glass from its resorts to Fiji Chemicals’ facility for processing of the glass.
Hilton Fiji cluster general manager Carey Osborne said they were thrilled to be working with Fiji Chemicals on the innovative waste reduction initiative and be the first hotel company in Fiji.
“As leaders in the tourism industry, it is our responsibility to take a proactive approach towards sustainability,” she said.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact while also giving back a unique and eco-friendly brick material to our communities for community projects.”
Fiji Chemicals managing director Darren Bentley-Fisher said they were excited to have the opportunity to work with Hilton properties in Fiji by reducing waste and contributing to a more sustainable future.
“This initiative is another huge win, not only for Hilton Fiji properties and Fiji Chemicals, but more importantly for the environment and our local community,” he said.
