Brightly coloured drums situated along the roads of the most populated areas in and around Suva are sure to catch the eyes of anyone who travels along these roads.

They signify the ongoing water shortage crises faced by people in those areas.

A team from this newspaper yesterday witnessed houses where drums, pots and buckets were out in yards, no doubt to harvest precious rainfall which fell over parts of the Central Division over the weekend.

Tacirua vegetable vendor Sera Liku said water supply had only started to normalise over the weekend.

“For about two weeks, we’ve had no water, it’s been going on and off. We keep the drums here so that when the water trucks pass by, they will come and fill up the drums when it is empty,” she said.

While thankful for the rain over the weekend, she said they were still storing water as they were unaware of when the water might be shut again.

According to Ms Liku, despite the water crisis, the family banded together to ensure their children went to school and their studies were not impacted by storing as much water as they could.
