A terrific round of seven birdies was the highlight of the $12,000 Fijian Hotel Pro-Am golf tournaments final day on July 20, 1986.

A report published by The Fiji Times the next day said the man behind those shots was the eventual winner of the tournament, Brett Ogle of Australia.

Taking over from overnight leader, Roger McKay, Ogle who was also the previous year’s Fiji Amateur Open Competition winner, fired in top score of 55 on the final 18 holes to earn himself a magnificent seven under par.

McKay, who had come in second had led overnight after 36 holes with 113, turned in 60 for the final round.

A delighted Ogle said after the tournament that he played well, and his short putts were “spot on.”

“I putted very well,” Ogle added. The tall, ever-smiling golfer from Castlehill in Sydney turned just turned 22 and said he would certainly be celebrating his win.

He turned professional only in December the previous year at the Australian Open championships.

Mr Ogle said he would be taking part in the Pacific Harbour tournament the following week and he had been invited to take part in a $1m tournament in Denver, Colorado, staring on August 13.

With McKay getting second place with 173, third place went to first round leader Tod Powe, a fellow countryman of Ogle ad McKay who tallied a final score of 175.

In the amateur division for men, best net was won by Gopal Krishna on 188 and J. Bowney while the best gross wen to Mehmood Buksh on 199, with R. Rayment and I.Staives coming in at second on 200.

In the amateur women’s division, Tahiti’s Stella Ellis and Joan Morley had both finished on 196 for best net while Ellis had best gross on 214.
