Fiji Airways Fiji 7s men’s skipper Tevita Daugunu apologised to the people of Fiji for his team’s performance at the Hong Kong 7s last weekend.
Fiji lost to a very strong New Zealand side, 24-7, and will be looking for redemption this weekend at the Singapore 7s.
“I just want to take this time to apologise to he people of Fiji for not getting the desired results last weekend,” the Fiji Correction Service officer said.
“We have no excuse, and we will be trying our best this weekend. We know that you (fans) will be cheering us on.”
Fiji faces Canada in its first Pool B match today at 4.04pm, followed by Samoa at 7.30pm and Spain at 11.33pm.
“We have been regrouping throughout the week and we have promised ourselves to do better this weekend,” Daugunu said.
New Zealand is in a tough Pool A with South Africa, Australia and Hong Kong. France, Hong Kong 7s bronze winners, top Pool C with USA, Uruguay and Kenya.
Great Britain, Argentina, Ireland and Japan round off Pool D.
The tournament kicks off at 1.30pm with Argentina taking on Ireland.
The cup final will start at 11.28pm on Sunday.
Meanwhile, no team enjoys playing at Singapore Sports Hub quite as much as Fiji, who have won the event more times than any other nation.
Last year, they lifted the Cup title for a third time in Singapore beating the returning All Blacks Sevens in the final.
A similar result this weekend will reignite their title hopes and put them within touching distance of Olympic qualification.
In total, Fiji have scored 226 tries in Singapore at an average of 4.3 per match, more than any other team, and they need 54 points become the first nation to rack up 1500 Series points at the tournament.
