More than 100 youths took part in the Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) final model audition at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday.
Fashion designer and judge for the auditions Temesia Tuicamia said the biggest challenge faced by models was their lack of confidence.
“Self confidence is a challenge for any Pacific Islander, especially when we’re coming from a communal culture,” he said.
“So coming to do something on your own and having to walk on a runway on your own, there’s a lot of confidence that needs to come out. So that is one of the challenges, but having these types of events like a fashion week builds confidence in youths who take part in fashion.”
He said three weeks ago, a criterion was set out for those who wanted to take part in auditions.
“You had to be 175cm or taller, girls had to be able to walk in four-inch heels and above and we specifically asked them to come in white tops and denim shorts particularly because we wanted to see their skin tone, markings on their bodies and just making sure that their personal outlook is just as good as their personality.”
Mr Tuicamia urged youths to aim for the sky and build their self-confidence.
