Rise Beyond the Reef Organisation launched an initiative in Nadi last week where farming clusters will plant 1000 breadfruit and coconut trees annually.
Director Fisheries and Forests, Neomai Ravitu launched the Forest Referencing Initiatives Program that will be targeted in Ba and Macuata.
Ms Ravitu said the initiative was in alignment with the ministry’s objective of supporting cyclone rehabilitation and improving the socioeconomic impact of forestry through the development of resources to support communities.
“This adaptation strategy of switching crops to species that are more adapted to climate change and shifting our farmers from mono-cropping to intercropping (agroforestry) can be replicated in other communities in Fiji,” she said.
She also congratulated RISE Beyond the Reef on the initiative.
“The role that they play is important as they connect rural communities to the markets and at the same time ensuring that villagers have access to basic necessities.”
