A young Fijian has expressed sheer excitement at the unique opportunity to participate in this weekend’s McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens.
Eroni Naua Nabulagi jetted into the country yesterday with his Japan under-18 side to compete in the competition at Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park.
The Vitogo, Lautoka villager secured a Japanese rugby scholarship while studying at Queen Victoria School three years ago and is glad to return to Fiji and play against his fellow countrymen.
“I am excited about playing alongside other boys I went to school with and at the same time learn more about the 7s code,” the excited 18-year-old said.
“Japan has a lot to offer in terms of skills, cultural experience and growth in rugby itself, but to be back home after three years is indeed something I am looking forward to.
“I am also excited about playing alongside my teammates in front of the home crowd.”
Nabulagi says his long-term rugby goal is to represent Japan in the future and he considers himself blessed to have secured a rugby scholarship in such a big country.
Eroni joined and his Japan side jetted into the country yesterday with a target to learn from local 7s clubs at this weekend’s rugby fiesta.
Coach Kobuki Yusuke hoped the competition would provide more exposure for the young side.
The team, he said, was invited by the tournament organisers last year and coming to Fiji was something they looked forward to.
“We have been training together for one year,” Yusuke said.
“We are here to learn from other teams and we are looking forward to that. “The boys are excited to be here and we can’t wait to play this weekend.”
The side will compete in the youth division.
