Diwali safety warning

WITH Diwali festivities drawing closer, police have cautioned revellers to avoid the use of fireworks in a manner which can cause harm.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said police officers would be out in numbers around the country to ensure fireworks were not abused.

“Safety is paramount with Diwali festivities in the coming weeks.

“This is not only limited to the use of firecrackers but to generally all aspects as there will be movement of people as well as general safety around the homes especially the monitoring of children,” Ms Naisoro said.

She said recently there had been a number of fire cases where families had lost their homes and with fire hazards such as firecrackers, monitoring of its proper use was paramount.

“In as far as children are concerned close supervision is vital so to avoid injury.

“General safety is also important especially with the use of electrical lighting and other decorations at this time.

“Movement is also expected to increase as families will be visiting each other and the necessary road safety measures must be implemented at all times.

“All road users are responsible for their safety and must be considerate of other road users.”

Ms Naisoro said police needed everyone’s co-operation in ensuring Diwali festivities were incident-free. Diwali will be celebrated on October 23.
