A frustrated mother of four claims the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) told her “get your buckets ready, it’s about to rain” when she raised concerns about water supply issues at Tavakubu Back Rd settlement in Lautoka.
Angeline Margaret Dunn said it was heartbreaking that despite contacting every authority possible, their complaints “continue to fall on deaf ears”.
She said they moved to the settlement a year ago, unaware of the water issue.
“Tavakubu Village and the homes around us have proper water meters and we don’t know why we have to suffer because water is a basic need and should be accessible to every human being,” Ms Dunn said.
“Ever since we built our home here, the norm was the Water Authority of Fiji would cart water every fortnight but this changed when the number of homes increased.
“Every time we follow up with WAF customer care, they tell us to wait for the rain.”
Ms Dunn said when the new school term started a week ago, she called WAF to have their tank filled so she could at least send her two primary-aged children to school.
“With the high cost of living this time, who can afford to pay for a truck to bring us water?
“We have complained, we called customer care and they just told us, its raining there now, fill up your buckets and use it for your children.”
The Water Authority of Fiji said they were looking into the claims made by the residents and would formulate a response.
