The Fiji National Rugby League will host a celebration next month to mark the 30th anniversary of the sport in the country.
The sport was introduced to the country in 1992 when a group of men from rugby union stepped out of their comfort zones to travel to Australia and play at the Nissan Sydney 7s.
Led by Culden Kamea, the group included Fiji sevens stars Alivereti Dere, Pauliasi Tabulutu, Noa Noadruku and Niko Baleiverata.
Joining them were Pio Nakubuwai, Eddie Waqa, Nemani Matirewa, Acura Niuqila, current Fiji Bati head coach Joe Dakuitoga and Livai Nalagilagi. Nalagilagi, who was based in Australia, was the only player with rugby league experience.
The team won the plate final and on their return home, they were given life bans by the Fiji Rugby Union. But the game grew on the outskirts of rugby union and made its Rugby League World Cup debut in 1995.
Since then, Fiji has made three semi-finals appearances (2008, 2013 and 2017).
Fiji National Rugby League CEO Don Natabe said discussions were taking place to celebrate the achievements in style.
“We’re putting something together for the 30th-anniversary celebration of rugby league in Fiji,” Natabe said.
“Founded in 1992, there’s a lot to look back on – the efforts and sacrifices that have been made over the past 30 years that have built Fijian rugby league into what it is today.
“It is important that we set aside a day to acknowledge and recognise the people who have put in a significant effort and sacrifice to bring the sport to where it is today.
“We will be announcing more details of the 30th-anniversary celebrations later next month.”
He says plans are to have former and current Fiji Bati and Bulikula players attend.
“We’re in discussion with former rugby league players and there is an idea to bring the team after this world cup over the celebration. I know everyone will be elated with the news of having former and current Fiji Bati and Bulikula players at the event.”
