Students from Year 1 to Year 4 will be taught under a new curriculum beginning next year. This, according to Education Minister Premila Kumar.
She said major reforms were taking place at the ministry for the early childhood education sub sector and primary school.
“We have reviewed literacy and numeracy for Year 1 to 4 and literacy and numeracy curriculum and the resource materials are being trialed in 90 primary schools throughout the country,” she said while speaking at the launch of Early Childhood Education online materials donated by the Fiji Water Foundation and Vision Fiji at Samabula Primary School recently.
She said the curriculum was currently been trialed in remote, special and inclusive schools before it would be implemented in all schools by 2023.
“So by 2023 each and every school from (Years) One to Four will be using the new curriculum and all these resources that is being donated today is going to help our students and teachers in teaching and learning – and particularly literacy.
Ms Kumar said the ministry was focused on improving literacy and numeracy skills in children.
“And you know as teachers and parents, as well as the school management committee members, we all agree as a community, as a society, that literacy and numeracy is fundamental.
“It is the foundation and if the foundation is strong, you can build better at later years.
“When I say build better at later years, what I’m referring to is that these students will do better in secondary school when they are taught very complex subjects — because they are able to understand, analyse, what they’ve learned over the years, they’ll be able to use that and sail through secondary school.”
