Women, men and children came in numbers to celebrate Tubou Day at the John Wesley College on Saturday.
Tubou Women’s Club team leader Meresaini Radinivuna said the aim of the celebration was to fundraise for the club as well as the women in Tubou, Lakeba in Lau.
“This is the first time we’ve ever had something like this,” Ms Radinivuna said.
“The fundraising was supposed to only be for the club but the head of the village wanted us to have a Tubou Day celebration.”
She said their goal was to collect $8000.
“At the end of the day each mataqali from the two clans in Tubou is to fundraise $500 each, we’ve just set out goal to $8000 and we know we will go over that target.
“This is to prepare us for the province meetings we’ll be having in the near future as well as things that are needed for example pots.”
She said the long-term goal for Tubou Day is to have a hall built in Suva.
“This hall or house will cater for functions like Tubou Day as well as meetings like our bose ni yasana.
“Every Prophet Mohammad’s Day we will also have Tubou Day because our plan for every year is to raise $40,000 so by the fourth or fifth year we should have a certain amount to buy the house or hall and we have started with that today (Friday).”
