As the general election looms, people need to remember that the FijiFirst government came to power through the “barrel of the gun”, says National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad.

He made this statement during a talanoa organised by party vice president Lenora Qereqeretabua at Samabula Primary School in Suva on Saturday.

“One of the things that happens in a democracy is a government in power is never fearful if you have good democracy,” he said.

“You know they put up their fight, they put up their policies, they do their campaigning but they are not fearful of losing. And they also respect the Opposition because in a normal democracy, you know if you are a government that someday you could be sitting in the Opposition.”

He said what we have in this country are set of wolves.

“They describe themselves as wolves. I’m not saying that, they said themselves that they are wolves.

“And these are the people who came into power through the barrel of the gun.

“They made their own constitution, they made their own laws and had their election and in the last eight years they continue to make laws to restrict the opposition, to terrorise the opposition, to ensure that they always remain in power.”

• Questions sent to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on Prof Prasad’s statement remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
