A Fiji Labour Party (FLP) government will get rid of the slums around Fiji and will give affordable housing to those living in squatter areas, said FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry in Nadi last Saturday.

He made the comments while outlining the party’s vision statement for the 2022 General Election.

“Under a Labour government, no one will be left behind — disadvantaged groups must be empowered,” he said.

“We feel government must provide affordable housing under a well-designed housing project.

“There are tens of thousands of people who don’t have proper housing, they are lining in these informal settlements.

“These settlements have grown and we cannot go on like this because otherwise we will become a nation of squatters if don’t do anything about it.

“We need to clear the slums because that is not how our children must live.

“There must be a program for housing these people and that housing must come at a price that they can afford.”
