Fiji has lost one of its most brilliant legal minds and an advocate of social justice and the creation of a truly democratic nation for all its citizens with the passing of Jai Ram Reddy, says the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam.
“The news of the passing away of an elder statesman and much loved son of Fiji has saddened us all,” said interim TISI Sangam chairman Parveen Kumar.
“In Fiji he played a seminal role in its post-independence political history as a senator and during his two long terms as leader of the opposition.
“The late Jai Ram Reddy sustained a strong sense of common citizenship among all Fijians, while maintaining respect and dignity for the iTaukei as the original inhabitants of the land.”
Mr Kumar said Mr Reddy showed a deep insight into how cultural differences arose, and used his powers of gentle persuasion to map a united and harmonious path forward, away from division.
“This was demonstrated in the clarity of his actions and advocacy for a united Fiji and understanding of societal changes that had taken place when he first entered politics in the 1970s, to his continued influential role in the sphere well into the 1990s.”
Mr Kumar said Mr Reddy was greatly admired by TISI Sangam members because he was always ready to avail of his services whenever required.
“The legendary speeches of Jai Ram Reddy during these occasions are still remembered for their appeals for inclusive practices, focus on education and calls for exemplary work ethic.
“He advocated strongly on the need for compassion, understanding and respect for all communities in Fiji.”
