The 2022 Coca-Cola Games had a successful finish over the weekend and Bob Snow is excited about what lies ahead for Athletics Fiji.

Snow, who is a former Oceania Athletics observer and Fiji national athletics selector, said itwas exciting to see the Games unearth new talent over the three-day event at the HFC Bank Stadium in Laucala Bay, after a hiatus of two years.

“It had been exciting watching the rebirth of the Coca-Cola Games this year,” said Snow.

“We had seen a lot of fantastic performances and I know a lot of these athletes will go on to represent their country next year in the Melanesian Championship and the Pacific Games.

“It is an exciting time for Athletics Fiji and I hope they will build on what they have seen here at the Games.”

The Sugar City of Lautoka will host the Melanesian Championships next June before the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, and Snow said Athletics Fiji would have to go all-out in keeping these athletes in the sport after the lure of former athletes into rugby in recent years.

“They will have to provide transport and all logistical matters to make sure these athletes take part in Lautoka and should field at least three athletes in every single event.

“I will be there to see which of the 2022 Coca-Cola Games champions make it through. It does not have to necessarily be the one who won the gold medal, but those who finished in the top four of every event.

“The Melanesian Championships will be a good platform for Team Fiji’s athletes before the Pacific Games in November 2023.”
