Rules for false starts have been relaxed in this week’s Coca-Cola Games to allow students to get back into the rhythm of competitions after the annual secondary school event was cancelled for the past two years.
Games starters’ coordinator Osea Waqa said the relaxation of rules was to allow athletes to familiarise themselves with starting since the games were halted over a period of time.
“They had not been competing for two years and we have to be fair in allowing them to get to the rhythm of the competition, and especially getting accustomed again with the timing of the start of races,” he said.
On Friday, some false starts were recorded in the 100m races resulting in a disqualification after two false starts.
Worldathletics.org reports that the rule states that only one false start per race is allowed without the disqualification of the athlete(s) making the false start.
Any athlete(s) making further false starts in the race shall be disqualified.
