It was an emotional day for two brothers from Nasaqalau in Lakeba who both graduated with a Deckhand Fishing Certificate from the Fiji Maritime Academy(FMA) in Nasese, Suva yesterday.

The duo had lost their father in May this year.

Their dad was an army officer and was the sole breadwinner in the family.

Sekope Raqio Tawatatau, 26, and Tevita Tawatatau, 23, were both working as security guards before undertaking the four-week program last month.

“We were excited to both graduate together and we have a huge responsibility in looking after our family,” Tevita said.

“It will be our first time travelling the high seas and we are very fortunate.

“We also thank the sponsors for this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Tevita said he hoped to pursue further studies at the maritime academy.

Sekope, who was also doing a short course in engineering at TPAF, said he hoped to secure a job opportunity with a fishing vessel.
