Fiji has entered a strong team for the Punjas Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) which starts at the Regional Tennis Centre in Lautoka tomorrow.
The team includes world ranked Saoirse Breen, Ruby Coffin, Krishan Raju, Storm Cornish, Sumit Lal and Josephine Grace Debalevu.
PNC media officer Linda Shannon said the tournament was a similar concept to the Davis Cup and Fed Cup organized by International Tennis Federation (ITF) in the world over in different groups for their class B members.
“Similarly in 2018, ITF introduced the Nations Cup for class C members to the world by supporting the inaugural event in Lautoka, Fiji in conjunction with Oceania Tennis Federation,” Shannon said.
“Tennis Fiji, as the host federation, partnered with the Fiji National Sports Commission and Punjas Group to deliver an incredibly successful event.
“Nominated nations will have the opportunity to host for two years prior to the event moving to a different host.
“This will be Fiji’s third year of hosting the event.”
Eight nations will participate this year.
They include Samoa, Tahiti, Vanuatu, Northern Marianas, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and Fiji.
There will be a total of 44 players.
The format for competition in both ladies and men’s draws will be two singles matches and a deciding doubles match.
The event will start with pool play culminating in finals and playoff finals for each position in the competition.
Tony Glentworth from New Zealand is the tournament referee this year.
