The increasing number of students at the Holy Cross kindergarten on Taveuni has resulted in the opening of another new block.

New Zealand High Commissioner Charllote Darlow opened the new block last week. It was funded by the office of the High Commission and NZ-based Whakatane Rotary Club costing $38,000.

Opening the new block, Ms Darlow told parents that this was an important event because it involved the children.

“I want to acknowledge that this has been a journey where people demonstrated persistence and perseverance, especially during the challenges of COVID over the past years,” she said.

“Having access to a learning environment where children can have space and do their classes is important.”

Holy Cross Parish project coordinator Ronald Sorby said they had a roll of more than 60 students attending kindy. “We started this construction in January this year and have managed to complete it within five months for our children,” he said.

“Over the years we’ve had many students enrolling for kindy here at Holy Cross so we asked for assistance from the New Zealand Government and they have helped us.

“This means we have two school blocks for our kindy students which will allow them to have their classes in a new learning environment which is important.”
