The Waiwai Water Treatment Plant in Ba worth $8.15million will be commissioned by June 2022.

Water Authority of Fiji CEO Dr Amit Chanan said the present Waiwai Water Treatment Plant was a conventional system that was built more than 60 years ago.

“With a treatment capacity of 13 million litres per day, the plant is reaching the end of its design life,” Mr Chanan said.

“Especially during extensive rainy seasons when the raw water has high turbidity, the plant is struggling to effectively treat water to meet the customer demand.”

Dr Chanan said the new treatment plant would provide a treatment capacity of 20 million litres a day, and was designed to treat raw water with high turbidity levels.

“WAF teams are working closely with contractor, Suez, and are well on track to commission the new treatment plant by June 2022.

“Despite some slight delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is good to see both teams carrying out the final touches and we hope to get the new water treatment plant online next month – this will ensure supply security of clean drinking water for Fijians in the Ba area.”
