QUEEN Victoria School Year 11 student Maleli Nauvasi of Bau House cleared a whopping 1.89 metres to claim gold at their athletics inter-house at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.
Nauvasi’s jump also helped his Bau House claim the overall title with 14 gold 14 silver and 11 bronze medals. In second place was Verata 13 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze.
Rewa was third with 13 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze while Tovata came in fourth with 9 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals .
Nauvasi said his friends talked him into taking part in the high jump two years ago and he never looked back.
“My friends in the dorm suggested that I take part in the high jump and I never knew that I had a talent for it,” he said.
He also shared how he would wake up in the morning and train.
“I wake up early in the morning and train. I do a few workouts that will help me better my performance as I have set a goal for myself this year.”
The 17-year-old said he would focus on the task ahead which is the Tailevu Zone.
“I have set my sights on winning gold at the Tailevu Zone and hope to clear 1.90 metres.
“I know I can do better than that.”
He acknowledged his friends and family for their support. I also would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me in my event. To my brothers in school, thank you for cheering me on during the event.”
