Former Saint Joseph Secondary School sprinter Heleina Young is certainly attracting attention from the Fiji Rugby Union officials.

This was after a viral YouTube video was seen shared among social media platforms showcasing the talent she has.

Young has been included into the Fijiana 7s Commonwealth Games extended squad which comes as a surprise to many.

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said that it is really a good opportunity for the 22-year old.

“Interestingly I have just found out that Heleina Young is part of the extended squad for the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“The FRU just wants to give opportunities and pathways to these young ladies. We want to give them an opportunity to come in and play and not just come in, train and there is no opportunity to play.

“The Fijiana 7s players did well in Tokyo last year and recently the Fijiana Drua team in the Super W competition and we hope that women’s rugby will continue to grow from there.”

Young is not the only young woman from an athletics background to have a crack at the oval-ball sport.

Former Gospel High School student and Blue-ribbon winner Younis Bese late last year traded her track shoes for rugby boots.

She was part of the winning Fijiana Drua side and is included in the Fijiana XV team this year as they prepare for the Women’s Rugby World Cup later this year.
