Almost 70 per cent of the population in Suva are on social media, with more women using a social media platform compared to men.

These findings were presented at the recent Dialogue Fiji organised workshop on Fiji’s national election by Jope Tarai, a PhD candidate at the La Trobe University in Melbourne.

“There is more online activity by the people in Suva when compared to other parts of the country,” he said.

“The example of the arrest of the person by the roadside exploded on social media largely due to the online activity of those in the Suva area.”

Mr Tarai said Lautoka had about 12 per cent social media users, Nadi stood at zero per cent while Labasa, Nausori, Sigatoka, Vatukoula and Navua all recorded less than 10 per cent.

“True to the phenomenon around the world, the young people constitute the majority of online space on social media. Most active and accessible for political party’s voter population online are the 18-34 years cohort. The youth online constitute 54 per cent of Fiji’s online social media presence.”

He said majority of the pages accessed on social media platforms belonged to media organisations.
