A Namosi district representative told Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this week that Veivatuloa Village needs a sea wall because of the rising sea level.
While the PM and other government officials did not respond to his request, Ro Baleibau Batilekaleka said after a talanoa session on Thursday that villagers had been asking for a sea wall for more than 20 years.
Ro Baleibau claimed the Ministry of Waterways had asked them to provide the materials for constructing the sea wall.
He said at high tide, the waves entered the village and homes were at risk of being washed away.
“It’s a hard life especially during a high tide or a bad weather we would face difficulties moving around,” he said.
“I have been the district representative (mata ni tikina) of Veivatuloa for the past six years and within those years I have been asking for a sea wall to be constructed.
“I’m really thankful that the prime minister is here with us today to witness it.”
Meanwhile, Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua said he had asked for construction of a sea wall since 2014.
“We have been asking for a long time,” he said.
“In 2011 I had talked to the prime minister and when I had entered Parliament in 2014, in every budget I ask about the sea wall and now it’s 2022.”
